The Ellen M. Bozman Government Center serves as the central office location for Arlington County, playing a vital role in County government activities. It facilitates County Board deliberations, hosts public meetings to discuss County operations and policy, and serves as the primary point of contact for residents and industry conducting business with the County. The objectives of this project were to establish a civic presence that affirms and celebrates the County's identity, create standardized and adaptable spaces for both staff and the public, and streamline customer service processes. Our firm provided programming, architecture, interior design, and construction services for the interior renovations of all 10 floors within the existing 235,000 sf building. The aim was to enhance various aspects of more than 42,000 sf of program space, including a welcoming lobby that prominently showcases the County's civic presence and offers improved navigation. We expanded the library's presence by adding a children's literature area and design features, including a custom radiating ceiling that visually extends into the 3-story atrium. Additionally, we focused on consolidating customer-facing activities into easily accessible spaces, bolstering building security to ensure the safety of both staff and the public, and designing diverse and flexible workspaces capable of accommodating various work styles. Standardized communications technology was implemented in meeting rooms while introducing new design elements and floor layouts to maximize access to natural light. Our efforts also encompassed enabling increased mobility for employees, allowing them to work from anywhere, and establishing hoteling and gathering areas for visitors to the Government Center.
